MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.When are my property taxes due?

If you wish to avoid interest, you must pay the installment by their due dates. The first installment is due on November 15 and the second and third installments are due February 15 and May 15. If the due date falls on a weekend, it’s extended to the next working day for current year taxes only. We do accept postmark as the payment date.

2.What if I can’t pay the total installment amount?

You are asked to pay at least $50 per account each time you make a payment. Be aware that interest will start to accrue on any installment not paid in full by its due date. If you have a mortgage company, check with them on their requirements for your taxes.

3.How much interest do I pay? Are there other charges?

The interest rate is 1 1/3% each month or 16% per year on the past due portion. Liens are recorded on past due Personal Property each year after May 15. The legislature raised the charge for recording a lien to $62.00 as of January 1, 2000.

4.Where can I pay my taxes?

Taxes can be paid at or mailed to the Coos County Tax Department, 250 North Baxter Street, Coquille, Oregon 97423. We do not have an office in the North Bend Annex.

5.Can I pay by VISA?

No, the law does not allow us to accept credit cards. We are able to accept checks drawn on your VISA account.

6.I live overseas, how can I make my payment?

If you wish to avoid interest, you must pay the installments by their due dates. A postmark is accepted on all payments. Your payment must be in USA funds, we are unable to accept foreign funds of any kind.

7.I will be gone when the bills come out, what can I do; I want to get the discount?

We do not have the new tax amounts available until late in October. Please wait and call after October 25 for these amounts. If you have your mail either held by the post office or forwarded, the best thing to do would be to call our office sometime after October 25. We will be glad to answer your questions regarding your property taxes. Some people have family members or friends taking care of their business while they are gone. There are also banks, which now have a bill paying service for their customers; you may want to check with yours.

8.Can I get a receipt for my payment?

If you wish a receipt when paying by mail you must enclose a self addressed stamped envelope at the time of payment. Please add sufficient postage for the number of receipts you are requesting. Normally, your cancelled check is your receipt but we will be glad to give you one if you request one. If you wish a receipt mailed to you later there is a nominal charge.

9.Do I have to come to Coquille to make a payment?

You can either come into the Coquille office or pay by mail, whichever you prefer we do accept postmark as the paid date. If you are paying close to the deadline for a payment be sure to ask your post office to postmark it immediately to insure you receive your discount and/or prevent accrued interest.

10.Can someone else get ownership of my property by paying my taxes?

No, anyone can pay on someone else’s taxes but that does not give them any legal right to the property.

11.What if I feel my taxes are too high?

You cannot appeal the amount of your taxes but you can appeal the value. On the back of your tax statement is the information on how to appeal. You can get the appeal forms from either the Assessor’s office or the County Clerk. The deadline to file a value appeal is December 31.

12.Can you help me with my state and federal income tax also?

No, we can only deal with Coos County property tax. You should call either the Oregon Department of Revenue or the Internal Revenue Service for help. Local libraries usually carry the forms during income tax time.

13.I need to know the square footage, the age of my home, and the value, do I talk to you?

No, you need the Assessor’s office; their numbers are 756-2020 or 396-3121, extension 266 or 268. They will be glad to answer your questions.
